Guide to Leaving Cert Subjects

Subject Choice for LC

Towards the end of Third Year (or Transition Year if you are taking it), students will be asked to choose which subjects they would like to study for their Leaving Cert.

First you must consider which Leaving Cert programme you will take. This will depend largely on what is offered in your school. Explore The Three Leaving Certs here.

There are usually more subject options available for Leaving Cert than Junior Cycle, which means you can focus your studies more on the areas you are interested in.

Your choice of subjects in the Leaving Cert may effect what courses or employment options are available to you after you leave school, so it is important to take the time to choose carefully.

Shane Bergin, Physics Lecturer

What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?

For my Leaving Cert, I studied Maths, Physics, Applied Maths (BRILLIANT SUBJECT), Chemistry, Music, English, French and Irish. I did the ones I was best at – simple. I worked hard for my Leaving Cert and hated exams. My school had a great record in maths and science –this culture helped.

What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?

I chose business studies and accountancy while at school and immediately after school I did an accountants technicians course.  Accountancy was a good choice for me and added to the experience I gained while working for Citibank,  I am comfortable completing my companies P&L's, managing my cash flows and planning financials for the future.  Did I choose well as a student? Luckily yes.

What subjects did you take in school and how have these influenced your career path?

In school I was not choosing any particular subjects to suit my career. I just did what I liked. When I went to college I studied Political science, but I never finished this course.
