Administrative

Administrative people are interested in work that offers security and a sense of being part of a larger process. They may be at their most productive under supervisors who give clear guidelines and while performing routine tasks in a methodical and reliable way.

They tend to enjoy clerical and most forms of office work, where they perform essential administrative duties. They often form the backbone of large and small organisations alike. They may enjoy being in charge of office filing systems, and using computers and other office equipment to keep things running smoothly. They usually like routine work hours and prefer comfortable indoor workplaces.

Academia & 3rd Level Education

Working in education at third level is very different to primary and secondary level teaching, with competing demands and a very different teaching environment. University lecturers will not obtain a teaching qualification in the same way primary and secondary teachers will. They will frequently work with rooms much larger, up to over a hundred in lectures, or smaller, a seminar of four or five students. These scenarios require very different approaches. Lecturers are not solely educators, they are researchers. For many research is their dominant activity.

The majority of university lecturers will have acquired a PhD, many will start conducting seminars, tutorials or grinds to earn income while working towards their PhD. A PhD is a tough path, spending several years conducting in-depth, original research in your chosen area. After obtaining your doctorate, the next step is a post-doc position where you will be introduced to academic life, beginning to contribute to research, have papers published and educate students.

The number of people attending third level institutions, both universities and institutes of technology, has grown dramatically over the last twenty years. This growth is likely to continue, with Irish universities hoping to attract increasing numbers of international students.
