The School of Physics has a long and distinguished history of teaching and research. Richard Helsham, the original Erasmus Smith's Professor, was the first to lay out Newton's methods in a form suitable for the undergraduate, so that his Lectures in Natural Philosophy were in use for a hundred years in the College and elsewhere in Europe.
Physics lies at the heart of most science and technology. Even modern biology seeks to analyse many of the processes of life in terms of physical laws.
The search for a fundamental understanding and the drive towards technological development in areas such as computer hardware continue to pose fresh challenges to physicists. They are tackled with a combination of experiment, theory and computation.
The School now consists of a very lively community of over 200, including 28 academic staff, 50 postdoctoral fellows and over 100 graduate students, representing many different nationalities.

- Nano electronics & Nanotechnology
- Theoretical & Computational Solid State
TYPE is a week-long programme of events organised by the School of Physics in Trinity College Dublin in which transition-year students can experience lots of different Physics-related activities.
As part of the programme, the students
- attend introductory lectures on Physics,
- take part in Physics experiments in different laboratories,
- visit an observatory in 'Astrophysics Day',
- carry out a physics project with other TYPE students,
- learn about careers for physicists,
- improve their computational skills,
- interact with students and research scientists working in Trinity College.
All TY Co-ordinators nationwide will be sent information regarding the programme in late August. Students should speak to their co-ordinator for more details if they wish to apply.
The programme is suitable for those students with a strong interest in Science. Please note due to pressure of numbers, it is likely that no more than one student from any one school can be accommodated.
